Newhouse 1 Dedicated

The Newhouse School formally opened its doors on Aug. 5, 1964, at a dedication ceremony featuring President Lyndon B. Johnson and his wife, Lady Bird Johnson. Greeted by Samuel I. Newhouse and his wife, Mitzi, the president accepted an honorary degree at the event on the Newhouse plaza and lauded the generosity of the Newhouse family as he began his keynote address. But the speech is better known in American history as Johnson’s second address in two days about the Gulf of Tonkin incident and the need for action in Vietnam.
