Srividya Ramasubramanian

Dr. Srivi Ramasubramanian (Ph.D., Penn State University) is the Newhouse Professor and Endowed Chair at Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. She is the founding director of CODE^SHIFT (Collaboratory for Data Equity, Social Healing, Inclusive Futures, and Transformation), a multidisciplinary research collaboratory uniting data scientists, community members and storytellers that has convened three flagship symposia and 145-plus workshops and events. A leading scholar of media, diversity and social justice, she is widely recognized for her pioneering work on race and media, media literacy, implicit bias reduction and scholar-activism, with expertise spanning critical media effects, data justice, digital cultures, intersectionality and applied communication research.

Ramasubramanian is an Elected Fellow of the International Comm Association, an NCA Distinguished Scholar, and Second Vice President of the National Communication Association, the world's oldest and largest professional communication association. She served as Editor-in-Chief of Communication Monographs, a flagship journal within the discipline, and was the first person of color to hold the position. She also founded The Difficult Dialogues Project, a facilitated-dialogue initiative that reached over 1,000 campus leaders nationally, and co-founded Media Rise, a global nonprofit for meaningful media that convened 3,000-plus media professionals across four countries.

Ramasubramanian has authored or edited five books and over 200 publications, including 115 peer-reviewed works, and has ranked among the top 2% of scientists cited globally for six consecutive years. Her latest book, "Quantitative Research Methods in Communication: The Power of Numbers for Social Justice" (2nd edition, 2025, with Erica Scharrer), connects social science research with social justice scholarship. Her work has informed U.S. Supreme Court and Ninth Circuit amicus briefs and has been featured on NPR and PBS. She is the recipient of the ICA Applied Public Policy Research Award, the NCA Gerald M. Phillips Award for Distinguished Applied Communication Scholarship and the NAMLE Outstanding Media Literacy Researcher Award.

Prior to Syracuse, Ramasubramanian was a Presidential Impact Fellow and Professor of Communication at Texas A&M University, where she also served as Associate Dean of Liberal Arts. Outside of her scholarly work, Srivi is a devoted mentor, especially to those who identify as first-gen, international, students of color and early career scholars. She is also a practitioner of mindfulness, a certified yoga teacher, and a lover of Indian classical music and poetry. She is the author of "Blue Nectar: Feminist Bhakti Poems on Divine Bliss" (2025) and hosts "Chai with Srivi," a podcast series with scholars and artists from around the world.
