Bio: Laura E. Cañuelas-Torres, a doctoral candidate, was born and raised in Puerto Rico, where she completed her undergrad and master studies. She has a natural curiosity and integrational world view that drives her interest in interdisciplinary approaches, frequently combining elements of sociology, anthropology, and other social sciences into media research.
Laura’s main areas of interest are social movements, non-electoral forms of political participation, minorities, and media coverage of protests. During her time in Newhouse, she has presented in multiple academic conferences, including International Communications Association (ICA), UNM Mentoring Conference, PRESENCE 2018, IAMCR, and AEJMC. Laura earned a Certificate in University Teaching from the Newhouse School’s Future Professoriate Program and was able to apply this knowledge while co-teaching a Newhouse undergrad course, Communications and Society, and during guest lectures in Public Relations courses. Students describe Laura as energetic, passionate, and knowledgeable.
Cañuelas-Torres also worked with Newhouse professor, Sean Branagan on the New Bosses-New Voices initiative to develop a Media Entrepreneurship curriculum for diverse students. She has been a member of the Teaching Evaluation Committee, the Dean Search Committee, and a GSO senator.
