Jessica Cain (she/her/hers) joined the broadcast and digital journalism department in 2023 as an adjunct professor. She teaches audio and digital news writing, reporting and producing.
When she’s not in the classroom, she’s out in the field, reporting for NPR affiliate WRVO. She has a particular interest in stories about politics and government and a passion for elevating voices from the whole community.
Cain has also worked in television for nearly two decades. Most recently, she could be seen on the airwaves filling in on the anchor desk at NewsChannel 9 in Syracuse. Before returning to Syracuse in 2017, she was a New York City-based package producer for Fox News, where she worked on major news events, including the 2016 presidential conventions and election.
Before that, she worked as an anchor and reporter for CNY Central in Syracuse and WWNY-TV in Watertown, NY. She has extensive experience as a multimedia journalist, writing, shooting and editing her own pieces.
The experience inspired her to mentor young journalists, with a particular focus on helping them walk into their first jobs with the skills and confidence to excel. She has given presentations on preparing for life in the news business at College Media Association conferences in New York and Philadelphia.
Cain has been honored by the New York State Broadcaster’s Association and Syracuse Press Club for her work.
She earned a B.A. in 2006 from Syracuse University, where she completed a dual major in broadcast journalism and political science.
