Students gain sports radio experience in real time

‘Newhouse at Night,’ a daily sports radio broadcast based at the Newhouse School, launched Jan. 31

Aspiring sports broadcasters at Syracuse University now have another avenue for hands-on learning and real-time exposure for their work.

In partnership with Galaxy Media and Twitch’s “Cuse Sports Talk,” the Newhouse Sports Media Center has created “Newhouse at Night,” a daily sports radio broadcast hosted by students.

Based in the Sports Media Center Gallery in Newhouse 2, the students will cover the latest in Syracuse University sports live on Twitch and ESPN Radio. The program launches the week of Jan. 31, with student programming from 7 – 11 p.m.

The program was created by professor of practice Olivia Stomski, director of the Sports Media Center, with Newhouse alumnus Ed Levine ’78, Galaxy president and CEO. “We are thrilled to partner with Galaxy Media and ‘Cuse Sports Talk,’” Stomski says. “This opportunity gives our students a platform to get hands-on experience on a big stage. They will have access to player and coach interviews along with feedback from Ed Levine and his staff.”

“As a proud Newhouse alum, nothing gives me greater pleasure than providing a first job in commercial radio and streaming media to the next generation of Newhouse broadcasters,” Levine says.

Stomski will run the broadcast with support from Neal Coffey, manager of operations and engineering,  Marlon Legaspi, Information Technology Analyst, and Roxane Niezabytowski, assistant manager of operations and engineering.

Broadcast and digital journalism (BDJ) senior Marco Moy is part of the inaugural group of students working on the production. “The opportunity to have fun doing live sports talk on a great platform like ESPN Syracuse in addition to being paid was too good to pass up,” he says. Moy, who also covers SU sports for WAER, says he hopes to improve his on-air skills so he can be as versatile as possible in the field of sports broadcasting. He hopes to secure a job as a production assistant at a big network following graduation.

In addition to Moy, students involved with “Newhouse at Night” are: BDJ majors Calvin Christoforo, Imani Clement, John Dales, John Eads, Cam Ezeir, Toluwalase Famuyide, Jake Gourwitz, Irie Harris, Brad Klein, Kyle Loughran, Tyler Melito, Jacob Morris, Tim Nolan, Chris Queripel, Ben Shulman and Ian Unsworth; and Matt Bonaparte, a communication and rhetorical studies major in the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

“Under Olivia’s Stomski’s leadership, this new partnership with Galaxy and Twitch provides yet another exciting opportunity not just for our students to get hands-on experience, but also for them to share their work outside the walls of Newhouse with a real, live audience,” says Newhouse dean Mark J.
