Student group Margins seeks alumni mentors

Launched last year, the mentorship program supports Newhouse students from underrepresented communities.

Last year, Newhouse student Jewél Jackson and alumnus Jonathan Chau ’20 launched Margins, a mentorship group for first-year and transfer students from underrepresented communities, including students of color and LGBTQIA+ students. Membership is open to students in any Newhouse program.

“Students of underrepresented communities… may not feel accurately represented, heard and welcomed,” Jackson says, noting that the group seeks to help students “navigate their academic, professional and social life at and beyond Syracuse University through mentorship, while simultaneously building a community.”

Now, the group is seeking Newhouse alumni who wish to participate in the program as mentors and create “an outside support system for students,” Jackson says.
