Insider Inc. and the Newhouse School announce diversity fellowship

In an ongoing effort to diversify media and ensure that those telling today’s stories reflect an inclusive range of perspectives, Insider Inc. and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University today announce a diversity fellowship as part of Insider Inc.’s ongoing fellowship program.

The diversity fellowship is part of a concerted effort by both institutions to discover, encourage and support underrepresented voices in media. Fellows will be paid to work full time at Insider Inc.’s New York City newsroom over the course of the six-month fellowship.

This is the fourth such partnership for the Newhouse School, which has previously developed similar opportunities with Time, Inc.Bustle and LinkedIn.

“Insider Inc. has had a long and fruitful relationship with Newhouse, and we’re excited to again work together to give more opportunity to budding journalists from diverse backgrounds,” says Kaitlyn Jakola, Insider Inc.’s assistant managing editor, who runs the fellowship program.

The diversity fellowship features professional development, training and mentorship. Candidates can apply for positions in a range of newsroom areas, including reporting, video, social media and syndication.

“We are excited to partner with Insider Inc. The fellowship highlights our commitment to diversity, an integral part of our mission as a school,” says Melissa Chessher, chair of the magazine, news and digital journalism (MND) program at the Newhouse School. “It also allows us to join forces with a successful and dynamic news organization that is a frequent presence at campus recruiting events, welcomes our students for tours of their editorial operations and often hires them.”

The inaugural fellowship will launch in January 2020; applications will be accepted in October 2019, with the first fellow to be announced at the end of November. The timeline for the summer 2020 Diversity Fellowship will be announced in January.

For more information about the fellowship or the application process, contact Melissa Chessher at mchesshe@syr.edu, or MND program coordinator Jessica Del Fuoco at jtarrats@syr.edu.
