What did you do for your undergraduate degree and what made you want to pursue a graduate degree at Newhouse?

I completed my undergraduate degree in sport management at the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. Throughout my studies, I reinforced my interest in the business and marketing sides of sports, particularly how brands, teams and leagues engage with each of their respective audiences. I wanted to further develop my expertise in advertising and media strategy, which led me to pursue a master’s degree in advertising at the Newhouse School. The program’s industry connections, hands-on projects and emphasis on digital strategy made it the perfect next step in my career path.

How did you first hear about the Forever Orange Scholarship and how did it play a role in your decision to attend graduate school?

I first heard about the Forever Orange Scholarship through emails from the University. I knew that if I attended graduate school it would be at Syracuse, although it did make pursuing a master’s degree much more accessible. Having the opportunity to continue my education at one of the top communications schools in the country while receiving financial support was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.

What unique features of your Newhouse graduate program made you want to apply?

Several aspects of the advertising program at Newhouse stood out to me. The real-world client projects and industry collaborations provide invaluable experience that will help me in my eventual career. Additionally, the program’s curriculum and focus on digital advertising, emerging media trends and brand strategy strongly appealed to me. The Newhouse alumni network and faculty with deep industry experience also played a big role in my decision.

What moments in graduate school have been the most exciting or defining thus far?

Some of the most exciting moments have been working on real-world advertising campaigns for major brands such as Ben & Jerry’s, Sour Patch Kids, Mondelēz International, AXIS Capital and Visit Syracuse. Applying what I’ve learned to actual business challenges has been both rewarding and motivating. Additionally, networking events and guest lecturers from industry leaders including alumni have provided incredible insights and connections that give me confidence as I transition into my career.

How are you combining your degree in sport management with your advertising degree? How have you utilized the Newhouse Sports Media Center?

My sport management background gives me a deep understanding of the sports industry, while my advertising degree allows me to apply that knowledge to branding and sponsorship more in depth. I’ve been particularly interested in how brands leverage sports partnerships, athlete endorsements and digital content to connect with audiences. I have taken advantage of the Newhouse Sports Media Center’s events and networking opportunities, which have helped me connect with professionals working in sports media.

What advice would you give to students that are in the initial stages of deciding to pursue a graduate degree at Newhouse?

I would encourage prospective students to think about how a graduate degree will complement their career goals. If you are passionate about media, advertising or communications, Newhouse offers unmatched resources, industry connections and hands-on learning experiences that will prepare you for success. I would suggest that students research each program’s curriculum and speak with faculty and current students to get a better feel for whether it’s the right fit for you.
