Military Visual Journalism

The Newhouse School is home to two Department of Defense-sponsored programs that teach active-duty service members advanced multimedia storytelling.

The Department of Defense sponsors the Newhouse School’s military visual journalism program, which offers two focused areas of study: advanced photojournalism (MPJ), based in the visual communications department, and advanced motion media (MMM), based in the broadcast and digital journalism and television, radio and film departments.

The students enrolled in advanced MPJ and MMM serve in the Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Army as mass communication specialists, public affairs professionals, photographers and videographers. They come to Newhouse for 10 months, completing coursework in communications, photography, journalism, design, sound and documentary production. Students gain strong storytelling skills, earn 30 credits toward an undergraduate degree, and can matriculate to Newhouse with successful completion.
