New Student Checklist

Please review and complete the items below to prepare for your first semester at Newhouse.

Activate your NetID

Your Syracuse University NetID will give you access to your email via SUMail, financial aid and registration system. It is essential that you activate and check your email account regularly, as it will be the primary communication source for class, program and school information before and after you arrive on campus. Your SUID is printed on your admit letter and Intent to Register form.

SUID Card

The SUID is an identity tool and is used to access a variety of campus services. Prior to June 15, you should follow these photo submission instructions (click on New Graduate Students.) You will be notified via email when your card is ready for pick up in 111 Waverly, Suite 111. After July 15, an SUID card must be requested via the request form.

Apply for Financial Aid

Office of Financial Aid

In order to be considered for federal aid you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If your program begins in the summer, you must file for both 2023-24 and 2024-25. You should also check your Financial Aid To-Do List on MySlice in order to apply for summer financial aid.

Communications Law Waiver Request

If you took a communications law course within the past five years, you may be able to waive this master’s program requirement and take another course in its place. You must have earned a B or better in a relatively recent course. A course description and syllabus are required. You must complete the Communications Law Waiver Request form by June 14 if you plan to request a waiver. Please send the waiver form and the course syllabus in one email to nhadvise@syr.edu.

Degree-bearing Transcript

Please refer to the Graduate Admission Transcript requirement page for submission information.

For students who start in the summer, the deadline to submit these documents is July 15. If we do not receive your degree-bearing transcript by this date, the Advising Office will place a hold on your student record, preventing your registration for future terms. Please notify us immediately if you are concerned about meeting this deadline.

If you are starting your program in the fall, you must submit your transcript by Sept. 15.

Students who earned bachelor’s degrees from Syracuse University do not need to submit a final transcript. Degrees will be verified internally.

Health Records and Insurance

You must complete your health history and immunization forms through the SU Health Services Patient Portal by July 1. Completion of this may require a physical or immunizations.

Health insurance is also required of all graduate students, to cover expenses not included in the health fee and medical treatment outside of the Health Center, such as emergency room care, hospitalization, eye care and dental services.

Housing

There are ample housing options in Syracuse, with many within walking distance to SU. Utilize the SU Off-Campus Housing Finder or apply for on-campus housing through MySlice.

Employment Verification

If you plan to work on campus, you are required to complete the I-9 employment verification process prior to beginning any paid work at the University.

Course Registration

Summer registration will begin in early June and instructions will be sent via email. Fall registration will begin on Aug. 1.
