Keonte Coleman teaches courses in broadcast journalism, media and society, and sports media at the Newhouse School.
Before joining Syracuse University, Coleman served as an assistant professor in the School of Journalism and Strategic Media at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), where he taught a range of journalism and media studies courses. He previously held leadership roles at Bennett College, including dean of the Professional Studies Division, chair of the Journalism and Media Studies Department and assistant professor. His professional background includes producing local television news for Hearst Television at WXII-TV in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and WAPT-TV in Jackson, Mississippi.
Coleman's scholarly interests explore the intersections of journalism, leadership, representation in media, sports communication and higher education. He is co-author of “Complete Guide to Television, Field, and Digital Producing,” a comprehensive textbook on news production.
He is the creator and host of the YouTube podcast “Breaking News with Media Leaders,” which provides insights for students and early-career professionals through conversations with leaders in journalism and academia. His “Student Media Analysis Journalism Bootcamp” offers training in evaluating newsroom coverage and developing stronger reporting practices across student-led media.
Coleman has received faculty of the year honors at both MTSU and Bennett College. He was nominated for the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship by MTSU’s president and selected for several national leadership programs, including the Scripps Howard Academic Leadership Academy and Hampton University’s Executive Leadership Summit.
As a journalist, he earned two Emmy Awards and an Edward R. Murrow Award. He received the Syracuse University African American Studies Fellowship as a graduate student.
Coleman holds a Ph.D. in higher education administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, an M.S. in broadcast journalism from the Newhouse School and a B.S. in mass communications from Jackson State University. His credentials include certifications from nationally recognized programs in leadership, student well-being and ethical journalism practices.
