Karen McGee works with three student-centered offices at Newhouse – academic advising, the Career Development Center and the Visitor’s Center. She works with students throughout their entire journey at Newhouse, serving as a liaison between Newhouse faculty and students, helping students experiencing difficulties in and out of the classroom, and serving as a resource to connect students with support and other services at SU. Karen also oversees COM 100, Newhouse’s first year advising seminar; acts as the school’s academic integrity adviser to students; and works to educate new students on major options at Newhouse through various programming.

She enjoys meeting with students who may not be certain about their major. She also coordinates the internal transfer program at Newhouse and helps acclimate transfers to Newhouse. Karen’s “NHADVISE” newsletter, sent weekly to all Newhouse students, is known for its colorful, highlighted copy and highlights important events and deadlines students need to know. Karen became assistant dean in 2006, after 14 years in the Newhouse School’s Career Development Center where she last served as director.

Karen holds a master of science in counseling in higher education from Syracuse University and received her bachelor’s degree in history from Allegheny College. Prior to joining the Newhouse School in 1992, she was an assistant director of admissions for St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. She loves animals of all kinds and enjoys restoring her 1840’s farmhouse and volunteering at the Skaneateles Historical Society in her free time.
