Newhouse Student Wins First Place at Prestigious Hearst Journalism Awards
Newhouse School senior Chilekasi Adele took top prize this spring in the Television News competition at the prestigious Hearst Journalism Awards.
Winning for his two stories “NY-3: The Special Election to Replace Santos” and “Cold Winter Temps Chill Driving Ranges on EVs”, the broadcast and digital journalism student took home a $3,000 award and will compete at the National Championships in San Francisco in June.
Adele was among several Newhouse students honored by the Hearst Journalism Awards as the competition announced winners over the past few months:
- Elizabeth Reardon ‘23, a magazine, news and digital journalism alumna, took third place in the sports writing category, earning a $1,500 scholarship.
- Maxwell Williams, junior in broadcast and digital journalism, took fourth place in the television news category, earning a $1,000 scholarship.
- Zach Nemirovsky, sophomore in broadcast and digital journalism, took fifth place in the multimedia enterprise category, earning a $1,000 scholarship.
- Ronnie Parrillo, junior in broadcast and digital journalism, took fifth place in the audio news/features category. Parrillo earned a $1,000 scholarship and qualifies for the National Championships in June.
- Alejandro Rosales, junior in magazine, news and digital journalism, took fifth place in the multimedia innovative storytelling category, earning a $1,000 scholarship.
- Connor Smith, senior in broadcast and digital journalism, took fifth place in the personality/profile writing category, earning a $1,000 scholarship.
- Arthur Maiorella and Joohee Na, both visual communications juniors, took 18th and 20th place, respectively, in the photojournalism story/series category.
Newhouse seniors John Perik, Murphy McFarlane and Nicole Aponte were awarded for their work last semester and will be also be competing in the National Championships this summer.
