Newhouse announces winners in 2022 ESSPA Awards competition
On Dec. 7, the Newhouse School announced the winners of the 2022 Empire State School Press Association (ESSPA) Awards, which honor high school student journalists from across New York State.
The 2022 award winners are:
- Best Artwork—Portfolio: Amintta Ragavanis from Lynbrook High School
- Best Illustration/Graphic—Portfolio: Amelia Pollicino from Lynbrook High School
- Best Illustration: Maddie Hood from Brighton High School for “Facing Them”
- Service to School: FMTV from Fayetteville-Manlius High School
- Best Overall Yearbook: Crossroads from Brighton High School
- Best Overall Newspaper: RamPage from Jamesville-Dewitt High School (tie)
- Best Overall Newspaper: Horizon from Lynbrook High School (tie)
- Best Overall Literary Magazine: Rambunctious from Jamesville-Dewitt High School
- Best Overall Layout Design: The Annual from Ithaca High School
- Best Overall Cover Design: Perspective from East Meadow High School
- Best Photograph: Madi Phillips from Jamesville-Dewitt High School for “Red Row”
- Best Overall Sports Coverage: Tribute from Holy Trinity High School
- Best Written Work in a Newspaper: Cassandra Levinson from Lynbrook High School for “Crisis Escalates in Ukraine”
- Best Editorial: Allison Wong from Fayetteville-Manlius High School for “AAPI Heritage Month” (tie)
- Best Editorial: Katie Chiulli from Lynbrook High School for “The Met Gala has to stop” (tie)
- Best Feature Story: Julia Swerdin from Lynbrook High School for “Ms. Moller Just Keeps Running”
- Best Sports Story: Alexis Raynor from Lynbrook High School for “Flag Football”
- Best TV Show: Spartan News from East Syracuse Minoa Central High School
- Best Written Work in a Literary Magazine: Anika Chiorini from Jamesville-Dewitt High School for “Exhaustion as a Dance”
- Award for Originality: Tara Lama from Brighton High School for “Disintegrate Beautifully”
