Summer Pre-College at Newhouse

Discover what life is like as a Newhouse student before you apply by taking part in summer high school programs on the Syracuse University campus.

Summer college courses teach advertising, broadcast journalism, social media, sports broadcasting and more. Learn real media skills from Newhouse professors on campus, or even through programs offered online or on location in Los Angeles and New York City.

Eligibility: Current high school juniors and seniors or recent high school graduates.

Previous courses include:

TV News Storytelling

You’ll learn the skills you need to tell a great story through writing, video, sound and heart. Learn the techniques for a great interview and how to find a great story. Embrace the difference between covering a story and storytelling.

Journalism from InstA to Zines

Students will apply the foundations of journalism to content creations across platforms. Projects include social media storytelling, zine creation, podcast production, breaking news coverage, and interviews. No journalism experience required, but curiosity is a must.

Sport Broadcasting

We will study storytelling in sports. We will take the building blocks of writing and delivery, work up to play-by-play with stops at talk shows and other reporting. The reason why we love sports and millions of viewers tune in to watch their favorite athletes; why we cheer, cry, compete and care.

Creative Advertising Art Direction & Copywriting

In this course, you’ll not only learn what advertising art directors and copywriters actually do, you’ll become art directors and copywriters yourselves. Discover the secret to creating great ideas, what makes a compelling ad campaign, how to concept, how to design ads, and how to write ads.

InstaFamous 101: Creating and Maintaining a Social Media Empire

Becoming famous on the internet has never been easier – or more difficult! Students will learn the fine details about target audiences, privacy and confidentiality, rules and risks, and the rapid digital changes. Students will be tasked with creating and maintaining a social network for a variety of professional and personal reasons, and prepare for a future in social media management.

Newhouse Immersion in LA

In the city where new technologies create magic, and dreams can come true, students learn how the rapidly changing media ecosystem works. This program will open a student’s eyes to the vast career opportunities available in an industry that’s being retooled because of reasons including shifts in technology and changing viewing habits. Students will also get an overview of areas of study at the Newhouse School and meet alumni who will share their experiences.
