Scholarships and Funding

Two students will be chosen each year for a four-day visit to Los Angeles for meetings, introductions, meet-and-greets, tours, meals and activities that connect them with established executives in media and entertainment.

The LBFM program will take place during Spring 2025 spring break, March 10-14, 2025.

The program covers costs associated with travel to Los Angeles (including airfare and transportation to/from airports), hotel room (double occupancy), most meals and transportation for meetings and events via Lyft.

Students must have demonstrated a strong interest in a career in media or entertainment and be actively engaged in activities at Syracuse University that support that interest.

At least one student will be chosen from applicants that are active members of the WJPZ staff and one student from the Newhouse School.

Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student at Syracuse University in the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters to participate. Applicants must be a junior or senior during the Spring 2025 semester.

A minimum grade point average of 3.0 is recommended. Conduct clearance from the Office of Community Standards is required. Once admitted to the program, students must remain in good standing.

Applications will be reviewed by a committee of Syracuse University faculty and administrators.

Applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

• Demonstrated interest in media and entertainment.
• Demonstrated preparedness and eagerness to interact with industry professionals.
• Demonstrated ability to benefit the most from this program, ultimately turning connections into opportunities.  

The scholarship is awarded to one student annually and follows that student over the course of his or her four years in the program. The Bandier Scholarship is among the largest single scholarship grant offered by Syracuse University. The scholarship program was established by a gift from music publishing executive Martin Bandier ’62, widely considered one of the most influential music publishers in history.

Students wishing to participate in academic-related activities/travel must request funding from their major department at Newhouse. (For instance, if are traveling to receive an award.)

Each residential master’s student is eligible for a one-time stipend of $400 to use toward conference or academic travel.

The Lorraine Branham Finish Line Scholarship provides a one-time award of $250-$5000 for residential seniors and master’s students in their final semesters. Seniors are eligible to apply in August prior to the start of their final two semesters and master’s students may apply in fall, prior to their spring semester. Awards are deposited in the recipient’s bursar account. Students fill out an online form and requests are vetted through Financial Aid. The Newhouse School administers this award.

The scholarship program is named in honor of late Dean Emerita Lorraine Branham, the first Black woman to serve as dean of the Newhouse School.

With a renewed focus on retention and graduation, Syracuse University implemented the Over the Line (OTL) initiative. For qualifying students who need 11 or fewer credits to graduate, this initiative reduces per-credit tuition rates for summer sessions. Eligibility criteria can be found here.

Increasing professional development opportunities, Syracuse University established this funding award to provide financial support in the form of meeting cost of credit for students when required by a company, and/or to provide support for living expenses associated with summer internships. Unexpected and difficult situations can happen to anyone at any time. Through the generous support of donors, Hendricks Chapel can assist students experiencing financial hardship. Mini-grants are available to meet a wide range of needs and to provide access to opportunities. Grants generally range from $300 to $500 and can be requested once per academic year. Categories of support include food, clothing, emergency travel, emergency health care, and other non-academic expenses. Our goal is to ensure access to academic enrichment opportunities for all students that would otherwise be unavailable to them. Syracuse University Libraries offers long-term laptop borrowing, available through reservation, in addition to the three-hour loan period for Dell, MacBook Pros, and Microsoft Surface Laptops.

Users with a valid Syracuse University or SUNY ESF I.D. can borrow Dell or MacBook Pro laptops by reservation for up to 14 days per month (sequentially or non-sequentially). When the overnight laptops are borrowed, users will also receive a laptop bag and charger.

Reservations for overnight laptops can be made online or in person at the Libraries, and laptops will be available to pick up from the Bird Library Lockers no later than noon on the day the reservation begins.

Laptops must be returned in person at the Bird Library Checkout Desk at least 15 minutes before the checkout desk closes on the final day of the reservation.
Newhouse may be able to provide a loaner for longer periods but not something we can promise.

The Syracuse University Campus Store has emergency funding for students who need assistance with the purchase of textbooks. The funding is through the textbook supplier, eCampus. Eligible students will be given a credit on account with eCampus and can login and purchase textbooks through the University’s textbook supplier. Faculty or staff must file a referral form which is reviewed by the Financial Aid Office. Once approved, the student will receive an email with the steps to use the funding through eCampus. The funds can be used for textbooks only, and students may select new, used, digital, and marketplace books through eCampus. The faculty/staff referral form can be found here.

Student Outreach and Support emergency aid may be available to support enrolled Syracuse University students with one-time financial assistance of up to $500, in the event of a personal crisis that includes an unexpected, unforeseen and/or unavoidable emergency expense.

The following list offers some examples of possible expenses covered by emergency aid. If the reason you are seeking funds is not listed below, that does not mean it won’t be considered. A case manager will fully evaluate your situation and determine how we can best help.

• Emergency Medical Care
• Safety Needs (i.e., changing a lock)
• Basic needs due to loss from fire, theft or natural disaster.
• Emergency Travel

All students must appeal to Financial Aid Office. Contact your Financial Aid Counselor or visit the Financial Aid website for instructions on appealing. If there is a true emergency such as a drastic change in family situation or unexpected medical event with the student, the Newhouse Student Succes Office MAY be able to supplement with small amounts but only after the student has exhausted their appeal with the Financial Aid Office.
